چکیده

We examine thermoelastic equations of state for silicate perovskite based on data from recent static compressiori studies. We analyze trade-offs among the fitting parameters arid examine data sets for possible effects of metastability and of Mg-Fe solid solution. Significant differences are found between equations of' state based on low pressure measurements obtained for perovskite outside of its stability field. I~icreasingly consistent results are obtained when higller pressure data are used, despite differences in the zero-pressure pararneters used to describe the equa t io~~s of state. The results highligllt the inlportance of measuring the thermoelastic properties of perovskite at high pressure, specifically within its stability field, and the potential problerns associated with large extrapolatioris of equations of state in the analysis of seismic data.

Scale limits of free-silica seismic scatterers in the lower mantle

Lower mantle seismic scatterers are often interpreted in terms of subducted basaltic crust, which should contain free-silica phases that are seismically fast. However, free-silica phases are unstable in a peridotite lower mantle, as they react with ferropericlase (magnesiowustite) to form silicate perovskite. Nonetheless, conservative estimates and recent measurements of diffusion coefficients ...

Iron partitioning in Earth's mantle: toward a deep lower mantle discontinuity.

We measured the spin state of iron in ferropericlase (Mg0.83Fe0.17)O at high pressure and found a high-spin to low-spin transition occurring in the 60- to 70-gigapascal pressure range, corresponding to depths of 2000 kilometers in Earth's lower mantle. This transition implies that the partition coefficient of iron between ferropericlase and magnesium silicate perovskite, the two main constituen...

Electronic spin and valence states of Fe in CaIrO3‐type silicate post‐perovskite in the Earth’s lowermost mantle

[1] The electronic spin and valence states of Fe in post‐ perovskite ((Mg0.75Fe0.25)SiO3) have been investigated by synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, Mössbauer and X‐ray emission spectroscopy at 142 GPa and 300 K. Rietveld refinement of the X‐ray diffraction patterns revealed that our sample was dominated by CaIrO3‐type post‐perovskite. Combined Mössbauer and X‐ray emission results show that Fe in...

Electronic spin state of iron in lower mantle perovskite.

The electronic spin state of iron in lower mantle perovskite is one of the fundamental parameters that governs the physics and chemistry of the most voluminous and massive shell in the Earth. We present experimental evidence for spin-pairing transition in aluminum-bearing silicate perovskite (Mg,Fe)(Si,Al)O(3) under the lower mantle pressures. Our results demonstrate that as pressure increases,...

TEM OBSERVATIONS OF AMORPHIZED SILICATE-PEROVSKITE, AKIMOTOITE AND Ca-RICH MAJORITE IN A SHOCK-INDUCED MELT VEIN IN THE TENHAM L6 CHONDRITE

Introduction: Tenham is a famous highly shocked L6 chondrite. Previous studies revealed a series of high-pressure minerals in the melt vein, including ringwoodite, majorite, wadsleyite, magnesiowüstite, akimotoite, silicate-perovskite, and hollanditestructured plagioclase [1-8]. These high-pressure minerals have been studied intensively in static highpressure experiments [9,10]. The presence of...
